The 60th National Democracy Day in Nepal

President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav shakes hands with Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal at a programme marking the 60th Democracy Day at Tundikhel in Kathmandu, 19 Feb 10.
At sunrise, the Nepali Army (NA) blew bugle from atop the Bhimsen tower (Dharahara) and fired celebratory salvoes from canon and guns.

Worships and prayers were also performed at various shrines for the eternal peace of the known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their lives for democracy.

The National Democracy Day is being celebrated to commemorate the day when Nepalis were released from the clutches of 104-years-long Rana autocracy on February 18, 1951.

On the occasion special ceremonies will be organised at Sahid Gate and the Army Pavilion. The state-owned Radio Nepal and Nepal Television will broadcast the events live.

Schools, colleges and non-governmental organisations are commemorating the National Democracy Day with various programmes. Public buildings will be illuminated in the evening.

Meanwhile, president Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, former King Gyanendra Shah, former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala, and other leaders have issued separate messages to countrymen on the occasion of National Democracy Day calling for combined effort from all sectors to strengthen democracy.
