Mirror Turned Chalkboard

I've had a vintage-y chalk board project in the back of my mind ever since I saw this post on design*sponge. Lucky for me, I found an old mirror that I thought would be perfect for said project at the flea market last weekend. I didn't take a before picture, but here are some photos of the finished product. It was such quick and easy task! (Seriously, I think it took longer to upload these pictures into blogger than it did to do everything else from start to finish.) To do it, I removed the mirror and spray painted the frame white. Then, I covered the smooth side of the fiber board that was behind the mirror with chalkboard paint and reassembled it. That's all! I'm thinking I'll use it for to do lists in my kitchen. :)

Snowball

I've been absent from the blogging world for a couple of days because I've been busy trying to piece my house back together. However, I'm happy to report that my ceiling project is nearing a close! The drywall guys were here Monday and Tuesday (finally!) to smooth and sand and I spent the better part of yesterday painting. My ceiling is now smooth and brilliantly white! (Since it probably isn't that noticeable and therefore probably, no definitely, not worth all the trouble I've put into it, humor me the next time you are at my house by exclaiming, "Kim, your ceiling is so smooth...and white!" You can ad lib as you like, but something along those lines should be sufficient.) So anyway, up to this point, I've been working solo on the entire thing (Jared refuses to get dragged into my crazy home improvement projects and I can't blame him...) but I'm hoping to solicit his help today. Because, due to the snowball effect of the project and the fact that the drywall guys did quite a bit of patching on our walls while they were working on the ceiling...we now have to re-paint the majority of our living space. Oh boy. All I wanted to do was paint my kitchen a different color...what happened?Source URL: https://science-logic.blogspot.com/search/label/home%20projects

I Spy...

    a ladder,
    a metal scraper,
    a spray bottle,
and a pile of ceiling texture that is no longer on the ceiling.

As you can see, my simple kitchen painting project has spiraled out of control. I somehow got it into my head that the ceiling in the kitchen and surrounding areas would look a ton better with a fresh coat of bright white paint minus the gross texture I applied before we moved into the house. I don't think I really knew what I was getting into when I spontaneously started scraping off the ceiling texture in the kitchen last week. Since our main living space is continuous, I have quite a bit of scraping to do. I'll keep you posted.

Note: For those of you who have been in my house and are confused thinking, "I thought the ceiling looked fine before," you would be correct. I really have no business staying at home all day. I get myself into all sorts of trouble.Source URL: https://science-logic.blogspot.com/search/label/home%20projects

Back Splash

Thank you for all the suggestions regarding my kitchen color. It is still red and green and will most likely stay that way for awhile since I have a difficult time making up my mind. However, I think I have ruled out the avocado green. While I like the color, I'm not sure I like it in the kitchen and especially MY kitchen. This is a picture of my back splash-which you should also consider. (I don' think it would look good with the green.) And while I would like a more modern, bright and open space, I'm not sure that dream will be realized in my current kitchen without doing a major overhaul. With all those earth tones in the back splash, I'm thinking burnt orange, maybe?? Any other suggestions?Source URL: https://science-logic.blogspot.com/search/label/home%20projects

A Cry For Help

At any given time and in any given room of my house you can almost always find several paint swatches on the wall. Often, visitors to my house notice the paint swatches and ask "Are you painting something?" To which Jared chuckles and I reply, "I'm thinking about it." Jared chuckles because I'm ALWAYS thinking about it. I can't help it. Paint is such a cheap way to change the entire look of a room and I'm constantly changing my mind. What doesn't help is the fact that I am attracted to many different decorating styles (as I am clothing styles) and I have yet to find a way to successfully combine them to create something that is my own. I do think an interior designer coupled with an unlimited budget could easily remedy this issue but I am currently without either so for now, I'm left to figure it out on my own. I seemed to have managed to focus my paint energy on my kitchen, which is why it currently looks like this:

It has been red since we moved in four years ago, but after buying a 1/2 pint paint sample at Lowe's it's now part Avocado Green. Hmmm. Although it is growing on me, I'm not sure if I'm completely sold on the green. Once again, I think bright and bold would be fun but I also think something more light, airy and seaside cottage-esque would be nice. (Light blue maybe?) Help! What color should I paint my kitchen? Consider this: I have dark gray counter-tops, natural colored wood cabinets and a fair amount of natural light coming in. Also, the nearby walls are painted a khaki color. Here is a not-so-great picture of it in all it's red and green glory so you can get a better idea of what I've got going on in there. I am open to any and all suggestions!

Bathroom Before and After

It's done! The most important parts have been completed for awhile but I just recently got around to getting the finishing touches put together. These aren't the most recent BEFORE pictures. (The walls had since been a different color and we had a different shower curtain.) However, at least you have an idea of what the bathroom used to look like so you can compare.

    Sink and Mirror After:

You can't see it in the before pictures but there used to be a wall and a closet to the right of the sink. (It's behind the door in the first picture.) Anyway, that is why the before pictures seem so much smaller. We took out the wall and the closet and it really opened the room up. Bathroom: The Details

Open shelving where the closet used to be:

Seagrass baskets and polka dot shelf liner (Target):
    White waffle shower curtain (Target):
Built-in magazine rack, compliments of my handy husband. (I think this is my favorite part of the room!):Bath towels (Target):

Ta-da!:Also, I'm not sure how well you can see it in the pictures but the walls are painted a mild blue: a Sherwin Williams color called Tradewind. The sink base, floor tile and light fixture are all from Lowes. I'm glad it's done and I'm very pleased with the way it turned out!Source URL: https://science-logic.blogspot.com/search/label/home%20projects

So Close Yet So Far Away

Bathroom update: we have can lighting, a new exhaust fan, new electrical outlets, a nice bright white ceiling, walls painted a refreshing light blue, a new light fixture and a mirror. (You can also see the dark brown sink base in the picture although it's technically not doing anything-just sitting there waiting to be set in place.) All that's left to do is hang the door, tile the floor, build the shelving where the closet used to be and touch up! We're getting close, which is good, because having our bathroom belongings strewn about the house and using the toilet in our cold, unfinished basement is getting old.Source URL: https://science-logic.blogspot.com/search/label/home%20projects

Spontaneous Bathroom Renovation

I say spontaneous because we weren't really planning to tear our bathroom apart on Friday afternoon. However, spontaneous might not be the right word since the renovation is actually the result of nearly two years of talking/whining/complaining/moaning (insert verb of your choice) to Jared about it. On Friday, he finally cracked! And now our bathroom looks like this:

It actually looks a little better than this now because Saturday we were able to clean up all the debris and install can lighting and a new exhaust fan. Here are a few pictures of the fun:

This photo was taken through a hole in the ceiling looking up into the attic where Jared had the fun job of wading through insulation to install the can lights. I'm actually amazed he put on a smile for the photo. In real life, he wasn't so amused.

I, on the other side of the hole, was in the bathroom cutting the drywall so the can lights would fit through the ceiling properly. I'm also amazed I put on a smile for the picture because in real life, I was not so amused. I think the saftey goggles are a nice touch, don't you?

I'll be sure to report our progress. In the meantime, we will continue to store our toilet in our bedroom. Gotta love renovation projects.Source URL: https://science-logic.blogspot.com/search/label/home%20projects
